Anita O’Day

Anita O’Day shattered traditions.

Always she marched to her own beat – female jazz stereotypes were not her gig.

She refused to wear the traditional jazz band outfit, an evening gown – a band jacket and skirt were her ensemble.

Early on she appeared with the Stan Kenton and Gene Krupa bands, referring to herself as a hip song stylist.

In the mid 50s she had a string of highly acclaimed albums but her drug addiction prevented her from reaching super star status.
