In retrospect it was a fortuitous moment.
Three music producers, Mario Dradi, Italian, and Elmer Kruse, German, Herbert Chapell, British, we’re going to produce a concert in Rome.
The reason?
Raise money for opera singer Jose Carreras, and his foundation, Jose Carreras International Leukemia Founation, who had just survived a bout with cancer.
And the producers enlisted the help of fellow opera singers and friends, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti.
The public concert by the three – took place in Rome on July 7, 1980, the eve of the 1990 FIFA World Cup Final.
It was watched by 800 million all over the world.
And that was the beginning of a glorious career for the three tenors.
The recording of the concert became the best-selling classical album of all times.
And here are two songs all part from the concert, conducted by another star, the brilliant Zubin Mehta, Indian.
