The kitchen sponge that handy item to clean up with, to mop up with after spills.
The kitchen sponge is very useful. Still, it is also dangerous. Most of us don’t have an idea just how dangerous it is.
The sponge is the perfect breeding ground for a list of dangerous pathogens. These pathogens cause us serious problems. These include Salmonella, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, E. coli, and Listeria. The reason is simple. The sponge usually is moist. This creates the perfect breeding ground for these dangerous bacteria.
So what can we all do about it? It’s also simple – use these three techniques to kill all those accumulated bacteria in your kitchen sponge.
- Pop it into your dishwasher when doing dishes.
- Place the sponge in a small dish. Add some white vinegar to it. Let it sit there for five minutes. Take the sponge out and let it dry.
- Make a paste with baking soda and water. Rub it into your sponge. Swish it around. Let it rest for five minutes and then squeeze the sponge, letting it dry before using.
