Amazing Different Flavours – Hot Dog Deluxe Dinner

Tasting Notes

Great but simple ingredients – a bit unusual- add up to great meal. The deluxe hot dogs, slightly smoky with a bit of char, the relish a bit sweet, vinegary, Brioche buns, go well together – a myriad of flavours, the crunchy cabbage cole slaw, all work in harmony.

What You Need

1 small white onion.

4 slices of bacon.

2 deluxe hot dogs.

2 Brioche hot dog buns.

1/2 cup store-bought relish.

1 can of baked beans.

1 small head cabbage.

1 pickled medium beet – we store-bought, taken from a jar of pickled beets.

Ketchup.

1 small carrot.

3 tablespoons olive oil.

1 tablespoon white wine vinegar.

Salt and pepper.

Equipment

1 medium frying pan.

1 medium bowl.

1 peeler.

1 small sheet pan.

1 small bowl.

1 slotted spoon.

Method

Dice your onion.

Cut your bacon into small chunks.

Now add your bacon and onions into the frying pan, put the pan on your stove top and gradually increasing the heat, till it reaches medium. By that time the bacon should have rendered nicely so that it’s crisp and the onions are soft.

With a slotted spoon remove the bacon and onions, adding to the small bowl. Leave the bacon fat in the pan.

Open you can of beans and add to the frying pan. Cook the beans till they become thick and mushy. Just before you are ready to serve, add the onion, bacon, mixture and mix gently.

Take your hot dogs and with a knife score them.

Then place them on to a small baking sheet and then into a pre-heated oven on the broil setting. They will take about five minutes.

Cut your brioche buns in half, add the relish on one half, ketchup on the other half. Set aside.

Dice your beet, set aside.

Peel your carrot into thin slices and then and add to the bowl.

Take your cabbage, core it, and then cut into slices, then add to the bowl.

Now add your vinegar, oil, and season with salt and pepper – but use more pepper than you normally would because you want the cold slaw to have a nice peppery taste. Mix well, set aside for one hour at least, allowing the flavours to mingle. Just before you are ready to serve, add the beets, mix gently.

You’re ready to serve.
