Diego Rivera

His large frescoes established the mural movement in Mexican and international art.

He started drawing at age three.

His parents installed chalkboards and canvasses throughout their home after he started drawing on the walls of the house.

He married five times, his third marriage was to to Frida Kahlo another major Mexican painter.

He was 42, she was 22. They divorced in 1939 but remarried a year later.

Art for Diego meant two things:

Showing the Mexican peasant, as noble and and blessed with innocence and beauty.

And the everyday Mexican struggling.

Fighting – seeking to change the political and societal oppression imposed by a ruling self-centred elite – his murals depicting the monumental struggles.

His influence is enormous. A major museum In Mexico City is a showcase of some of his art.
