The Yeats family was artistic. His dad was a well-known portrait painter and his brother, William Butler Yeats, the renowned poet.

I had no idea who he was until I saw his works in the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin.

Butler started of as an illustrator. His early pictures were typical, lyrical, landscapes. But that was not to last.

His approach to art changed. By 1920 he started painting about the plight of early modern Irish mankind and the inherent loneliness of that plight.

Today he is considered the most important Irish painter of the 20th. Century, so readily apparent given his magnificent creations.
